Report: Orlando International Planning Massive Refurbishment
by Daniel McCarthy /One of the mainstays of U.S. travel is reportedly getting a major overhaul.
Orlando International Airport (MCO), the seventh busiest airport in the U.S. by passenger traffic, is planning a pair of upgrades that will modernize the hub.
The first is a $2 billion overhaul of its rental car operations that will free up space for more onsite parking by consolidating all of MCO’s rental car activity in one facility, centralizing it in one dedicated terminal.
That plan will be funded by an increase in the Customer Facility Charge (CFC) paid by rental car users, which will go from $6 to $9 per day starting on Nov. 1, 2024.
The second is a $1-billion-plus renovation of its North Terminal Complex, as estimated by the Orlando Sentinel, which includes terminals A and B. The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that the plans will see a “modernized interior” at those terminals, with new retail and restaurants, better seating, and more digital enhancements.
The plans, according to the Sentinel, also include new shuttles on the airport’s well-known tram system and a new look inside, which hasn’t been completely updated since the 1970s.
Work could start as soon as next year.
