CDC May Advise Pregnant Women Against Travel to Brazil, Other Countries Affected by Zika Virus

January 14, 2016

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may issue a warning to pregnant women against travel to Brazil, and other Latin American and Caribbean countries, because of a virus outbreak that has been linked to brain damage in newborns.

The Zika virus, which is being spread by mosquitoes, first appeared in Brazil in May. Local transmission of Zika virus has been found in Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Paraguay, Suriname and Venezuela.

A spokesperson said the agency hopes to make a final announcement today or tomorrow.
