Smithsonian Journeys has announced a new collection of active tours in Europe that are themed around food and wine, launching in 2027.

Smithsonian Journeys is a tour operator run by the Smithsonian Institution that focuses on expert-led travel experiences designed to be culturally immersive and enriching. The company offers a collection of guided land itineraries and, thanks to its partnership with AmaWaterways, river cruises.

The new collection features three small group tours that invite travelers to walk through celebrated food and wine regions in France, Italy, and Spain. Each itinerary includes two to six miles of walking or easy hiking per day, with options to choose between easier or more challenging active excursions.

The new Smithsonian Journeys itineraries are the eight-day Trails of Italy: Walking the Vineyards & Villages of Tuscany & Piedmont, the nine-day Trails of France: Walking the Vineyards of Burgundy, and the nine-day Trails of Spain: Walking the Vineyards & Towns of Rioja & Basque Country.

Highlights of the tours include hiking through Tuscany’s Chianti Hills and the UNESCO-listed vineyards of Piedmont, tasting wines at Burgundy’s historic châteaux and estates, and walking a section of the Camino de Santiago before sampling pintxos in Spain’s Basque Country.

“Our travelers are increasingly looking for ways to stay active while also connecting more deeply with the places they visit,” said Walter Littlejohn III, senior vice president, Smithsonian Journeys. “These new active journeys bring together scenic walks through some of Europe’s most celebrated wine regions with the chance to experience local food, wine and culture in a way is both engaging and rewarding.”
