7 Things to Consider Before You Switch Host Agencies

7 Things to Consider Before You Switch Host Agencies

The host agency landscape has changed. If you haven’t compared your options recently, it may be time to look again.

Maybe your business has outgrown your current host. Perhaps you want better earning potential, stronger technology or more responsive support. You may have developed a specialty your current host doesn’t fully support. Or you have simply started wondering whether there is now a better fit for the business you’ve built.

Technology is advancing quickly. Commission models have evolved. Marketing has become more sophisticated and automated. New specialty programs have emerged. A comparison you made even a year or two ago may no longer reflect what is available today.

So, before making a move, what should you be looking for?

1. Start with your business – not the host agency

The first question shouldn’t be, “Which host is the biggest?” It should be: “Which host is the best fit for the business I want to build?”

Think about where you want to be in three to five years. Do you want to specialize in cruise? Grow your group business? Build a team? Move further into luxury? Or simply become more efficient so you can spend less time on administration and more time selling?

Look beyond the host agency’s standard offering and investigate how well it can support your particular growth path.

Luxury is a good example. Selling high-end travel requires more than access to luxury suppliers. Your client-facing brand, website, email marketing, magazines and other communications need to reflect the expectations of that audience. If luxury is part of your growth strategy, ask whether your prospective host offers a dedicated luxury program and distinct client-facing marketing rather than simply adding luxury products to its standard offering.

At The Travel Agent Next Door, luxury advisors can step into a completely separate LUXE ecosystem — with its own branding, colours, fonts, website experience, marketing and luxury supplier mix, all designed to speak to the affluent traveller.

2. Look beyond the headline commission split

“Earn up to 100% commission” sounds great. But what does 100% actually mean?

When comparing hosts, dig into the details. Are there administrative or other fees deducted from that commission? Does reaching a higher commission level increase your monthly fee? If you earn your way to a higher split during the year, when does it take effect? And importantly, do you retain your achieved level when the calendar turns to January?

These details can make a significant difference to your actual take-home income.

The Travel Agent Next Door is refreshingly straightforward here: advisors can earn up to 100% commission on preferred suppliers, without an “admin fee” quietly reducing that 100%. And once you’ve earned your level, you don’t start every January working your way back up from scratch. Even better, when you qualify for a higher split during the year, it is applied retroactively for that calendar year.

3. Ask whether the technology actually saves you time

Technology has become one of the biggest differentiators between host agencies – but having more technology doesn’t automatically make a host better.

The question is: Does it make your day easier?

Good technology should reduce repetitive tasks, simplify bookings and administration, make client communication easier and give you more time to sell.

Ask whether the host relies primarily on off-the-shelf third-party platforms or develops technology specifically around its advisors. Is there an in-house technology team? How quickly can systems evolve? Most importantly, do advisors have a voice in what gets developed?

4. Find out who chooses the “preferred” suppliers

Preferred supplier relationships affect everything from commission and amenities to marketing opportunities and support.

But here’s a question advisors don’t always ask: Who decided which suppliers are preferred?

Ask how suppliers are selected and whether advisors have input.

At The Travel Agent Next Door, agent partners actually vote on preferred suppliers. It’s a small detail that says a lot: the supplier strategy is shaped by the people doing the selling, not just by head office.

5. Check out support team response

AI and automation can solve more problems than ever before. But when a booking goes sideways and a client is waiting for an answer, sometimes you simply need a knowledgeable human being.

Before switching, find out exactly how support works.

Can you pick up the phone? Is support available by email, ticketing system or screen share? What are the actual hours? Is there weekend coverage? Are there subject-matter experts for groups, finance, marketing and other specialized areas?

At The Travel Agent Next Door, support is deliberately human. Advisors can reach the team by phone, email, ticketing or virtual meeting six days a week, with specialists across different parts of the business.

6. Assess the marketing journey through your client’s eyes

Most established host agencies offer marketing support. The more revealing question today is how well all those marketing pieces work together.

Put yourself in your client’s shoes.

Open one of the host’s consumer emails and click an offer. Where does it take you? Does the client remain within your digital ecosystem or get sent elsewhere? Can they continue browsing your website? Are booking engines integrated? Can you easily take an offer, article or blog from your website and share it to your social channels?

This is where The Travel Agent Next Door’s model becomes especially practical. Your website, supplier offers, booking engines, email marketing, digital magazines and social content are designed to work together.

7. Don’t underestimate community

Jus because you are an Independent agent shouldn’t mean you’re alone.

Most host agencies have conferences, events, Facebook groups and networking opportunities, so this is one area where it’s worth speaking directly to existing advisors rather than relying solely on a brochure.

Ask the advisors what the community is actually like. Do advisors help one another? Do experienced advisors share knowledge? What happens when somebody needs help with a group, a destination they don’t know or even coverage during a personal emergency?

The bottom line: talk to advisors who are already there

Commission, technology, marketing, supplier relationships, training, recognition, onboarding, fees and support can all be compared on paper. Culture can’t.

Before making a decision, talk to advisors who have already made the switch. Ask what they love — but also ask what surprised them, what they would change and whether the reality matched what they were promised.
