Small-ship expedition operator Adventure Canada has announced a new expedition to Svalbard for 2027, inviting travellers to experience the High Arctic at a moment of seasonal transition – when returning light, lingering sea ice, and ecological rhythms refined over millennia shape the landscape.
The line says the new Svalbard: North to the Midnight Sun voyage, which features two departures in 2027, reflects a shared commitment to deep regional expertise and meaningful engagement with place.
Situated between mainland Norway and the North Pole, Svalbard lies at the threshold of ice, ocean, and sky. This eight-day expedition aboard the ice-class Ocean Albatros—sister ship to Ocean Victory—explores glacier-lined fjords, wildlife-rich coastlines, and the drifting edge of the Arctic pack ice – an environment defined by movement, variability, and change.
Here, polar bears patrol the ice edge, walrus haul out along remote beaches, Arctic foxes roam tundra slopes, and immense seabird colonies fill the cliffs with sound and motion. Each day’s route and landing are guided by conditions on the ground, allowing the journey to unfold thoughtfully and responsibly in response to weather, ice, and wildlife behaviour.

“Svalbard demands humility,” says Cedar Swan, CEO of Adventure Canada. “It’s a place where ice, wildlife, and weather are always in motion, and responsible travel means listening first and adapting constantly. This expedition reflects how we believe travel should happen in the High Arctic, and indeed everywhere we operate – thoughtfully-paced, deeply informed, and grounded in respect for both the environment and the people working together to understand and protect it.”
Starting in Oslo, Norway, guests take a charter flight north to Longyearbyen, Svalbard’s main town and one of the northernmost communities on Earth. Here they board Ocean Albatros to begin the northward voyage.
Over the next couple of days, the expedition will journey through Northwest Svalbard National Park, an area that holds some of the archipelago’s richest layers of human history. First recorded by Willem Barentsz in 1596, this coastline later became a centre of Dutch and English whaling.
Moving on into northeastern Svalbard, the influence of the warm Gulf Stream fades, with colder waters and heavier ice shaping a stark polar desert. Despite this austere appearance, life thrives here. Arctic foxes, seabird colonies, walrus, and more, call this area home. Expedition plans here remain flexible, guided by shifting ice, wind, and sea conditions – an essential part of travelling responsibly in the High Arctic.

Weather and ice permitting, the itinerary aims to visit some of the northernmost land on Earth. This may include Nordaustlandet or the far-flung islands of Sjuøyane, which are situated roughly 1,000 kilometres north of mainland Norway’s Nordkapp. With suitable conditions, guests will step ashore before heading further north toward the Arctic pack ice.
Next, it is on to Kongsfjorden, long a focal point for Arctic research and exploration, and then a visit to Ny-Ålesund — the world’s northernmost settlement with permanent civilian residents — to learn about the international scientific collaboration that takes place here around climate, atmosphere, and ecosystems.
The expedition concludes back in Longyearbyen, followed by the return charter flight to Oslo.
Departures of the new Svalbard: North to the Midnight Sun expedition are available May 18-25, 2027, and June 1-8, 2027, with pricing from US$7,895 per person.
