Norwegian Cruise Line Orders Four Next-Generation Ships

by Daniel McCarthy  February 15, 2017

Norwegian Cruise Line Corporation has signed an agreement with Fincantieri S.p.A. shipbuilders to build four next-generation ships for its Norwegian Cruise Line Brand.

The ships will be delivered each year from 2022 to 2025, with an option for two new ships to be delivered in 2026 and 2027.

All four ships will be able to carry approximately 3,300 guests and will build on its Breakaway-plus class that includes the cruise line’s latest ship, Norwegian Escape, as well as its next two, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Bliss.

President and CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line Andy Stuart said with the new ships, Norwegian hopes to “offer guests the innovative experiences that have come to define the Norwegian Cruise Line brand.”

While no details of the new ships have been released, Norwegian’s Breakaway-Plus class includes innovations such as 12 pools and hot tubs, a “Snow Room” that fills with four inches of snow and a three-story rope course, the first of its kind at sea, as well as its first-at-sea Margaritaville restaurant.

Norwegian said that the new ships will also “feature a host of innovative designs that will further elevate its already award-winning guest experience.”

With the new order, Norwegian will debut seven ships in the next eight years.

The next one, the 3,850-passenger Norwegian Joy, is set to debut this spring and will be the first Norwegian ship built specifically for the Chinese market. It will homeport in Shanghai and Beijing and will include Norwegian’s luxury experience, the Haven.
