Canada Expands Biometrics Screening Program
by Jessica Montevago /Beginning today, travelers visiting Canada from Europe, the Middle East and Africa will have to provide fingerprints and photos when they apply to visit, work or study.
In an effort to streamline the entry of travelers, visitors between the ages of 14 and 79 will have their fingerprints verified by Canada Border Services officers at 57 ports of entry across Canada. Automatic fingerprint verification is available at eight airports: Toronto Pearson, Calgary, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Pierre Elliott Trudeau in Montreal, and Halifax.
The fingerprints are valid for 10 years and must be renewed when they expire.
Biometrics are not required of Americans, and tourists who hold a valid electronic travel authorization (eTA) will be exempt.
“Expanding the collection and verification of biometrics to more applicants will strengthen immigration and border screening processes by confirming a person’s identity,” said Immigration Department spokesperson Shannon Kerr.
The initiative is part of a joint border security information-sharing arrangement with the U.S., Australia, New Zealand and the U.K.
