Journey Beyond, the Australian tourism group that manages multiple travel brands, has announced the 2027 season for its iconic rail operator, The Ghan.

The Ghan is an all-inclusive rail journey linking Adelaide with Alice Springs and Darwin. With a legacy longer than 95 years of operation, The Ghan is an iconic travel experience that combines the nostalgia of rail travel with rugged adventure in the Australian Outback.

New for 2027, The Ghan’s northbound journey will be extended to a three-night, four-day experience, giving travelers more time to step off the train and explore the beauty and culture unique to the region. Departing from Adelaide, travelers will enjoy a full day of exploring the Flinders Ranges, which was recognized as one of the top 25 places for travel in 2026 by Lonely Planet, followed by off-train excursions in Alice Springs and Katherine, and ending in Top End.

“The Ghan holds a special place in the story of Australian travel, and guests have been asking for more time to experience its remarkable landscapes,” said David Donald, executive general manager of Rail at Journey Beyond. “By extending the northbound journey, we’re allowing travellers to slow down, deepen their connection to Country, and discover Outback Australia in a way that is both immersive and unforgettable.”

Journey Beyond Rail is also launching two new luxury cabins on The Ghan, as well as other rail lines, The Indian Pacific and The Great Southern: The Aurora Suite and Australis Suite.

The new, spacious rail cabins are three times the size of the next largest category, the platinum cabins. Both the Aurora Suite and Australis Suite were designed in collaboration with award-winning studio Woods Bagot and feature interiors inspired by the nation’s landscapes and heritage. The private bedrooms include custom beds and generous ensuite bathrooms, as well as a full lounge set and bar. Large picture windows offer expanded views of the passing scenery.

In addition to the comfortable surroundings, these suites offer elevated in-suite benefits like butler service, a personalised bar, and premium amenities.

The suites launch in April 2026, and while most 2026 departures are already sold out on The Ghan, the 2027 season is now available to book.
