Greece is adding more policies to crack down on Airbnbs, this time with plans to introduce stricter criteria for short-term rentals.

By summer 2025, it is expected that the country will implement regulations such as minimum property size, ban on basement rentals, liability insurance, mandatory disinfection, security systems, and fire safety measures, according to Greek Reporter.

The restrictions will make it increasingly difficult for Airbnb owners to operate in the coutnry

Minister of Tourism Olga Kefalogianni said there will be monitoring in place and penalties in place for not meeting the new quality assurance, health, and safety standards.

The news comes after Greece announced a ban on new licenses for short-term rentals in Athens starting on Jan. 1, 2025, as the country tries to mitigate overtourism and a housing crisis.
