The Plaza Hotel in New York City will close for the next four years starting in January 2027 to undergo extensive repairs and restoration work.
The iconic landmark hotel, located on Fifth Avenue by Central Park, first opened in 1907 and has remained a core part of the city’s landscape for nearly 120 years. In a statement, the hotel’s management explained the reasoning for shutting down while renovations are underway.
“Understanding the unique place in New York City’s architectural heritage and cultural history it holds, The Plaza Hotel is advancing plans for repair and restoration works to its landmark-protected façade,” the statement says. “The undertaking reflects the complexity of maintaining a property of such architectural and historical significance, with careful consideration given to preservation requirements and the building’s long-term care, as well as the safety of our guests, employees, and the wider community.”
The statement also notes that the projects complexity will require “detailed planning and coordination with relevant stakeholders, alongside adherence to applicable historic preservation requirements,” and that further steps in the planning and execution process are still under review.
News of the closure is especially impacting the wedding industry, according to Washington Post, as the hotel’s Grand Ballroom will also be shuttered for the time being and is a hot spot for getting married.
