JetBlue Changes Basic Economy Carry-On Rules

JetBlue is changing the rules for its Blue Basic fares.

Starting on Sept. 6, JetBlue will allow basic economy ticket holders to bring a carry-on bag onboard at no additional cost.

Previously, JetBlue did not include a carry-on with the Blue Basic tickets—flyers wanting space in the overhead bins would have to either buy a higher-fare ticket or pay extra to add it on. Now, they will be able to bring it onboard if there is space in the overhead bins. If there isn’t, JetBlue will check the bags at no additional cost.

In a statement, JetBlue said that it made the change because of customer feedback.

“We’re always looking for ways to evolve our offering in response to customer preferences. This is a win-win as we improve the customer experience and keep JetBlue competitive in our industry,” JetBlue president Marty St. George said.

Blue Basic is the lowest level fare that JetBlue offers. It does not include any checked bags or allow for free changes to the ticket, nor does it include seat selection. It also includes a $100 per person cancellation fee and ticket-holders have to board in the final boarding group.

The next level up, Blue, allows for free changes, cancellations, and seat selections. Blue fare ticket holders get to board with general boarding, too.
