Marriott Enters Licensing Agreement with Sonder
by Briana Bonfiglio /Marriott International has entered a long-term licensing agreement with Sonder Holdings, a supplier of apartment-style accommodations in urban areas.
The partnership will add about 200 hotels and apartment buildings to Marriott’s portfolio. More than 9,000 rooms will be added by the end of the year, and about 1,500 are in the pipeline over the next few years, for a total of more than 10,500 rooms that will join the new Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy collection.
“We are excited about the addition of Sonder’s portfolio to our system, which will expand our portfolio of longer-stay accommodations in key markets around the world,” said Tim Grisius, Marriott’s global officer of M&A, business development and real estate. “Marriott has long believed in providing the right product at the right price point for all trip purposes and generations of travelers. With the planned addition of Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy, we will be able to provide guests seeking apartment-style urban accommodations with even more options in the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio.”
Sonder was founded in 2014 and operates apartment-style and boutique hotels across North America, Europe, and the Middle East. The properties offer longer-term stays and cater to a younger demographic with digital-first operations.
Marriott Bonvoy members will be able to earn and redeem points at Sonder hotels starting later this year. The companies expect the full integration of Sonder’s properties into the Marriott app and website to be completed in 2025.
