Delta Air Lines is joining several other major U.S. carriers by raising its checked bag fees by $10, effective tomorrow.
The move follows similar announcements made by United Airlines and JetBlue last week. The change brings the cost of a first checked bag on Delta to $45 for domestic and short-haul international flights, while a second bag will now cost $55. Previously, travelers paid $35 for the first bag and $45 for the second.
Delta SkyMiles Medallion club members, first-class passengers and other eligible customers will still be able to check bags for free. The increases don’t impact those flying on long-haul international flights, where the cost for checked bags remain the same.
Industry analysts largely view these increases as a response to surging oil prices, which have nearly doubled since the onset of the conflict with Iran in late February.
Unlike fuel surcharges, which are common among European and other international carriers and often fluctuate with the market, these increases in ancillary fees are considered permanent.
